It'd been driving me nuts to see on Facebook. So much so that I resorted to parody & sarcasm, and posted this on my personalpage a while back:
"HI IT'S SUNDAY SO IT MUST BE TIME FOR A QUIZ
YOUR P*RNSTAR NAME IS the password you use to access your online banking AND the last 3 digits of the long number on the back of your credit card AND your current working phone number AND that word you can always remember so you use it for everything! HAHA.
QUIZ'S ARE FUN AND ALWAYS REALLY HARMLESS, HAVE A GREAT DAY EVERY1.
Everyone seemed to get the joke, and laughed. But then I saw one of those same people answering a quiz a few days later, giving the names of all the pets they've ever owned...
This stuff is nightmarish. I don't know what it's doing to our brains.
Oh yes. There are definitely posts on Facebook that are trying to get your password information. But I would argue that this data mining scam is even worse - because it’s honestly much more likely to work.
Nice one. I’m a Matrix kid so I understand that we’re being fed fast entertainment, but are nonetheless plugged in. While the algorithms will compile whether or not you’ve made a selection, I think we can attempt some semblance of curation over our online environment. We can disconnect or disengage. We can consume art instead of photoshopped celebrities.
I like the idea of online connection. I like the community you can build and the people who can inspire you. I recognize when apps make me feel ick and accept that in order to get that little bit of beauty, there is ugly.
I guess for me, I feel aware of what I get. Sometimes it’s fast entertainment and I’m game for that. But when I want something more, I know I won’t find it there. I hope as a larger society we discover that we feel more full with our phones tucked away.
Very nicely put. I worry that all of our interactions and participation online is either being reduced to how companies can extract value out of our very existence, or how rhey can manipulate us to take some Future action, be it buying something or voting a certain way or hating our neighbor.
If you reply to say “this is data mining” you are still giving them something. You must ignore and delete and send a private communication to your FB friend to stop poisoning your feed.
Honestly, I have grown to think that the facebook/instagram/tiktok algorithms are the devil in disguise.
Great piece!!
Thanks!
You’re not wrong…
Excellently researched. And bang-on.

Oh definitely. There is always value to polarization because two groups are much easier to control. 😱
Everything is marketing. And boy does it work.

I get that but I was trying to educate both the person posting and others in the comments.
At any rate, maybe because I have hidden all the culprits, but I don't see these nearly as often as I once did.
