My favorite current comic series of the moment is Monstress, by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda. Its anime-style art (but in full-color!) and deep story are a rare combination in Western comics.

My favorite fantasy series is Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings. I love that it tells the story of one character over his entire life and the relationships he develops over the decades. My favorite single novel is probably Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman. I love Gaiman's construction of an entire under-world full of its own history and mythology.

That comic sounds really cool. As for Neverwhere, I saw the British production of that (with Peter Capaldi, before he was the Doctor!) and then tried to read the book, but it was so close to the show that I couldn't get into it. I need to pick it up again now that it's been a few years.

I did the reverse! There's also an audio drama that the BBC did a few years back with James McAvoy.

As someone old enough to remember the Sunday comics section in an actual newspaper, Calvin and Hobbes is easily my favorite comic. It captured the imagination and thoughts of a young boy perfectly.

I also remember, at Christmastime, the Sunday newspapers were huge because of all the store ads.

Mother Courage and Her Children and other Brecht stories. Faust, Melusine, Undine, and knight errant legends and sagas. I love old worlds, those wondrous, mystical romances and chivalric tales.
